Jonathan Silver exhibit at New York Studio School Gallery January 19, 2019. Garth Evans, Brandt Junceau (Video by Maud Bryt)
I’m interested because the head seems such a sculptural lump to begin with, but it raises all those issues of recognition. . . The whole arena of portraiture, which is, of course, very, very traditional, because I think in the contemporary world a sculpture is probably something that is not immediately recognizable—at least I have that idea—whereas a portrait is presumably immediately recognizable: that’s its whole purpose. –Garth Evans
What’s going on here? I don’t think it’s simply, let’s remake the head in terms of the way it’s structured. I don’t think that’s what’s happening. –Garth Evans
It seems to me it’s more a kind of psychological process—than an entirely visual one. –Brandt Junceau
The two outer pieces seem as much excavated as modeled. I wouldn’t say, carved—but really literally, excavated, not just gouged, but almost returned to, as if modeling were also uncovering. –Brandt Junceau
