In the Summer 2025 issue of Artforum is an article Making Do (the return of Adhocism). It touches on “scavenged environments can have a breathtaking beauty, but the adhocism of poverty…has no romantic attraction for those that are forced to suffer it.” This forum of the Condon show relates (at least to me) to Adhocism on a few levels. The most obvious connection is the piece in the show titled “John Heliker”, just the chair itself is an example of taking a broken cast off and making it functional again thru spontaneous ingenuity. And then again all the pieces in the show have that aesthetic. But the question of bringing the make do of poverty into world of fine art is once again the mixing of high and low culture. I think that using artists names was just a way that Condon thought would more easily allow viewers to enter (engage) with the work.
Thanks for another interesting forum.
