Some thoughts and associations : Julian Schnabel’s (circa 1979) plate paintings- Salvador Dali’s “Persistence of Memory” and his public persona- John Chamberlain’s “Dancing in the Dark” – Lynda Benglis’ Artforum ad (with large dildo) and pours of pigmented latex. By chance I am reading Roland Barthes “The Language of Fashion” and the section “Dandyism and Fashion” in which he covers “signaling” through discreet signs, and how the dandy slightly changes accepted forms to separate himself from others, “…the Dandy is condemned to invent continually distinctive traits that are ever novel”.
