Nevelson builds outward in an additive/compulsive manner, one form on top of another until a mass is achieved. Many of the works seem like barricades (elegant barricades) built to ward off (emotion?). The crate pieces (I think) can be closed, again keeping the inside protected (coffins?). That large diagonal piece looks like it could be read like braille. The first time I saw her work in person in the late 1970’s the pieces seemed like huge walls of midnight. Night, barricades, blindness, death….and all very serious work.
