Sculpture Forum 54: Hans Josephsohn

Garth Evans, Brandt Junceau, Jock Ireland, and Mallary Marks discuss the Hans Josephsohn exhibit at Skarstedt Gallery in New York, NY, on view September 6 through October 28, 2023. (Audio recorded by Mallary Marks. Photos by Maud Bryt).

Is Josephsohn superficial? Cute? Lazy? Ingratiating? Insincere? Does his work have an absence of tenderness, love, as Garth feels? Is there no precision in the work? Is he merely claiming a tragic story? Is his work cuddly, as Jock remarks? Are the small mouths out of proportion, as Brandt says? I think they’re all wrong, and that Josephsohn’s work looks the way it does from a place and process of integrity and deep feeling, that the forms are precise in their truthfulness about the mutability of being in a body through time and space. I think that Josephsohn’s forms live in a state of becoming and decay which bypasses all the art theories and preferences other sculptors may have.
